The tips below come directly from our drivers and animal welfare team, and they apply whether your pet is travelling 50 miles or 1,000 miles.
Introduce the Travel Crate Early
Several weeks before the journey, place the crate in your home with familiar bedding and encourage your pet to explore it voluntarily. Feed meals inside the crate and reward calm behaviour. Pets that associate the crate with comfort and safety travel far more calmly — reducing anxiety for both the animal and the owner.
Keep Your Pet Cool and Hydrated
Dehydration and overheating are the most common welfare risks during pet transport. Offer water at every rest stop and avoid feeding a large meal in the two hours before travel to reduce the risk of motion sickness. Our vehicles are climate-controlled, but bringing a portable water bowl and familiar water from home can make a real difference.
Stick to Your Pet's Routine as Much as Possible
Pets thrive on routine. Try to maintain regular feeding times and exercise windows on travel days. A short walk or play session before the journey helps burn off nervous energy. A tired, calm pet is always a happier traveller than a restless, overstimulated one.
Pack a Travel Kit for Your Pet
Prepare a bag containing your pet's regular food, medication, vaccination records, a favourite toy or blanket, a collar with ID tag, and spare waste bags. Having everything organised before collection day reduces last-minute stress and ensures our team has everything they need for the journey.
Verify All Documentation Well in Advance
International pet transport requires specific documentation — including microchip registration, vaccination records, and for travel to the EU from the UK, an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) issued by an Official Veterinarian no more than 10 days before departure. Book your vet appointment early as Official Veterinarians can have limited availability, particularly in peak travel months.
